Payal Tadvi was a medical student, pursuing post-graduation course in gynaecology from Topiwala National Medical College, an attached college under BYL Nair Hospital, Mumbai, Maharastra, India. She belongs to the ST (scheduled tribe) caste Tadvi, which is a tribal community of Bhil ethnic group. The Tadvi Caste tribals are found in the states of Maharastra, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan. The 26 year old Doctor was not a bright student in studies since childhood and used the constitutional reservation for ST (Scheduled Tribes) to get admission in the Topiwala National Medical College, BYL Nair Hospital. She was living in the hostel of her college Topiwala National Medical College where she committed suicide on 28th May 2019. Three senior doctors and colleagues of Payal, namely Dr Hema Ahuja, Dr Bhakti Mehare and Dr Ankita Khan have been accused of abetment to suicide. Reportedly, they used to mentally harass and torture her, discriminate her on basis of caste and even regularly mocked her for taking admission on ST quota. The family members want the CBI to probe the case and suspects foul play in it. Payal’s parents call this as a ‘murder’ and not just suicide. The three accused were seen outside Payal Tadvi’s room moments before she hanged herself. Her family members met the Medical Education Minister Girish Mahajan, who has assured justice and speedy probe in the case. The three accused doctors have already filed an anticipatory bail application in the court. They were arrested by the Mumbai Police and taken into custody. The Deputy Commissioner has suspended the Gynaecology Head of the Department. It also came to light that Payal Tadvi had stopped coming to the college and attending classes due to emotional stress for more than 2 months in the year 2018.
All over India, people are desperately looking for Payal Tadvi Whatsapp chats showing the harassment she went through by her colleagues. However, no such Whatsapp chat screenshots have come to light in the media. Perhaps, the police mihtt have kept it secret for case investigation purpose. |
